“Splitting, Reconciliation and Repair: Moving Toward Healing and Wholeness” Belfast & Donegal, Ireland March 27- April 3, 2008 Both personal and political conflicts are driven by powerful archetypal energies from the unconscious. These energies amplify individual as well as collective passions and make genuine dialogue and relationship difficult. On an individual level, personal complexes and threats to our ego-ideal are heightened through conflict. On the collective level, issues of ego-security are raised that lead to national, religious or ethnic conflicts. In general, these conflicts tend to be “mythologized” and take on a dramatic structure around the dynamic of “good” and “bad”. This dynamic often deteriorates into violence, where actual evil becomes a reality and splitting between people occur. Both ensure that the unconscious archetypal “agenda” is fulfilled. Building on the backdrop of Northern Ireland’s conflict and recent peace process and conciliation, this seminar will explore such archetypal themes as holding the opposite forces within us, reconciliation, wholeness vs. splitting, projection of shadow, and fear of the “other”— all elements in the narratives of Northern Ireland, Africa, the Middle East, and many other parts of the world.
